About this tool

A loan calculator gives you the one number that matters most before you borrow: the monthly payment. Type in the loan amount, the annual interest rate (APR) your lender quoted, and the term in years, and the tool applies the standard amortization formula to show what you would pay each month, plus the total interest and the full amount repaid over the life of the loan. Everything updates live as you adjust the inputs, so you can compare offers side by side in seconds.

The year-by-year balance chart shows where your money actually goes. In the early years, most of each payment covers interest while the balance barely moves; later, more of each payment attacks the principal. This is why a shorter term or a lower rate saves so much: less time accruing interest means a smaller total cost, even when the monthly payment is only slightly higher.

How to use the loan calculator

  1. 1Enter the loan amount you plan to borrow.
  2. 2Add the annual interest rate (APR) quoted by your lender.
  3. 3Choose the loan term in years.
  4. 4Review your monthly payment, total interest, and the yearly balance breakdown, all update live.

Good to know

This tool is built for US borrowers and works for car loans, personal loans, and mortgages alike. The figures cover principal and interest only, property taxes, insurance, origination fees, and other lender charges are not included, so treat the result as a solid estimate rather than a final quote. All calculations run entirely in your browser; nothing you type is sent or stored anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

It uses the standard loan amortization formula: payment = P × r / (1 − (1 + r)^−n), where P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate, and n is the number of monthly payments.
