Hash Generator

Generate MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 hashes instantly.

Uses your browser's WebCrypto API (crypto.subtle). MD5 and SHA-1 are not offered because WebCrypto does not support them, and both are considered broken for security purposes. Nothing is sent or stored anywhere.

About this tool

Hashes are the fingerprints of the digital world, verifying downloads, checking file integrity, and generating checksums all depend on them. This free hash generator computes MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 for any text you type or any file you drop in, with results appearing instantly.

The privacy story is what sets it apart. Most online hash tools upload your file to a server, a non-starter for sensitive documents. Here, hashing happens locally in your browser via the Web Crypto API: your file never leaves your device. A 50MB limit keeps large-file hashing smooth, with a progress bar so you always know it's working.

How to use the hash generator

  1. 1Choose Text mode and type your input, or File mode and drop a file (up to 50MB).
  2. 2Select which algorithms to compute: MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512.
  3. 3Hashes appear instantly as you type, or with a progress bar for files.
  4. 4Click any hash to copy it to your clipboard.

Good to know

Pick any combination of the four algorithms and click any hash to copy it. Whether you're verifying a download's checksum against a publisher's published value or generating test fixtures, it's fast, free, and private.

Frequently asked questions

SHA-256 and SHA-512 are the secure choices. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes (collisions are practical) but still fine for non-security checksums like quick file comparisons.
